Ponder this: a man was sentenced to die within the week, on the condition that his death was to be unexpected. He reasoned that would amount to a pardon:
- He couldn't be executed on Saturday, because since it is the last day of the week, not having been killed by Friday he'd expect it to happen then.
- Since he couldn't be executed on Saturday, the last day he could be executed would be Friday; so if hadn't been killed by Thursday, he'd expect it to happen on Friday, which ruled Friday right out.
- This would leave Thursday as the last execution date; which he would expect come Wednesday night, etc.
In this manner, he had proved to himself that he would not be executed at all, so when he was put to death on Wednesday, it was quite the surprise. ◄mendel►
